Global Engagement

“It is necessary and urgent that teachers prepare students to understand the world in which they live, in all its complexity, to recognize the way in which global and local affairs are intertwined, to understand globalization and its consequences, including global risks, and to have the skills and the desire to contribute to improving the world.”
Dr. Fernando Reimers, Harvard Graduate School of Education

Explore the World and Your Place Within it.

Our interconnected and interdependent global community will increasingly reward those who are prepared to collaborate and compete with people from all parts of the planet. The Hun School has committed to a wide-range of initiatives that aim to foster habits of mind that embrace cultural empathy, a commitment to cooperation, an appreciation of our common humanity, and a sense of global responsibility.
Through curricular support, auxiliary programming, and travel opportunities, Global Engagement programs at Hun are poised to create well-rounded, engaged global citizens.
Classes across the curriculum explore issues from a variety of perspectives. With state-of-the-art video conferencing equipment in the Wilf Family Global Commons students can collaborate with industry experts and other classrooms around the word. In 2016 Global Studies classes are took part in a pilot program called Reach the World, where they meet virtually with Fulbright Scholars in Morocco and with teachers and students in Ecuador. Curricular initiatives are also enriched with a variety of speakers, documentary screening, and cultural celebrations.

Experiential Travel Experiences - Hun Without Borders

The centerpiece of Global Engagement at The Hun School is the experiential travel experiences, Hun Without Borders. The experiential travel experiences create opportunities for students to spend time in communities with people who have different worldviews from their own.

“In order to be globally proficient, our students will need to learn how to interact and collaborate with people from cultures and backgrounds different from their own.  It is easy to empathize with those similar to yourself, so our travel experiences are designed to take our students into their learning zone, which is a step right outside of their comfort zone, in order for them to build the skills necessary for cross-cultural collaboration in the future.”
Pauline McKean, director of Global Engagement
